Cervantes Institute to celebrate world's first "Spanish Language Day"

June 20th, 2009 marks the first annual Día del español "Spanish Language Day" celebration in all of the Instituto Cervantes branches throughout the world. The purpose of this day is to establish a meeting point for Spanish speakers and to increase the visibility of the Spanish language, validating it as aninternational means of communication. An event to be enjoyed by the whole family family and visitors, Instituto Cervantes has organized a series of activities around Spanish words, their diversity and how they are perceived which begin at 11am local time of each branch.

In preparation for “Spanish Language Day” celebration, the Instituto Cervantes has launched a platform that encourages people from all over the world to vote for their favorite Spanish word and even invent terms that they think should be added to the language. Please visit http://www.eldiae.es/ to propose and vote for your favorites or for more information on this day!

Felipe's study abroad experience: 8 weeks of learning Spanish

Felipe Petri spent 8 weeks studying Spanish in don Quijote Madrid.
This is his story, in his own words...

I had two friends that went to don Quijote for a short term period. She studied in Madrid and Barcelona, he studied in Barcelona. Both really enjoyed the experience and recommended the school to me.

The school is really a Babel tower. There were people from Latin America, Europe, Asia, and North America all in my own class. The teachers are mostly young and fun. That really helped relate to the new culture we were facing since they were speaking Spanish but spoke “our language”.

Spanish people are great to interact with! For Latin standards, maybe a little distant at first but that’s a very shallow first impression. I still have contact with all the friends I made in don Quijote. I visited Madrid again after I left the school and was able to organize a little gathering between those that were still in Spain and others that came back just for the sake of getting back together again!

There’s nothing compared to spending time in a country where the language spoken is the one you’re trying to learn. It’s the fastest and most accurate way of learning. It is really culturally fulfilling and an amazing experience to just experience the differences between the regions of such a vast country that Spain is. I visited Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela and loved them both. I still want to go back and get to know the rest of Spain.

I stayed at a friend’s house, so I do not know what the school’s accommodations are like. But the school offers good service and I’d recommend it. I had a great time and learned a lot even though we partied a whole bunch!!! hehehehe

I want a brochure to come back... please let’s rush it!

Free Spanish literary text online

Spanish Reading aficionados and lovers of anything Spanish: listen up!

You’ve probably heard at one point of your life about the literary novel ‘Don Quijote de La Mancha’ by Miguel de Cervantes. Or perhaps heard that it is the first novel ever published in the history of the world? Or that it is the 2nd most published book in the world etc. The important thing is, you’ve heard about it many times, yet you’ve never gotten around to reading it.

Well, guess what? don Quijote.org (the school) is proud to have available online a collection of works to read, print, or download in PDF format. These works include Cervantes’ satirical novel as well as some of the widely known Spanish literary novels, poetry, plays and mini-biographies. All for free!

We also have available an informative mini-guide of the History of Spanish literature (in Spanish), made especially for our Spanish students. Anyone interested in the background history of the Spanish literary world can get an inside glance at each era and how time has influenced the literary writing styles of each author. This seems to come in quite handy for a Spanish student who knows too well this is what makes up the bulk of their university studies.
